As cruisers are usually well equipped to deal with minor medical issues and are generally pragmatic and practical, their insurance needs can be largely, if not wholly, for emergency medical care that would otherwise cause considerable financial discomfort.

The freedom of being able to set your own course, to dock wherever you decide and generally live a life of liberty and good health is something to be admired. Expat Underground wants to be able to help you do this with peace of mind, cruisers health insurance can be a difficult subject to navigate and that is why Expat Underground has broken down the basics for you.

Generally any cover is better than no cover at all but you could be paying for something you don’t and probably won’t need, however we find that many cruisers go uninsured because they feel that if they save by not paying premiums that they will be able to pay for medical expenses out of pocket, if ever required. It is an understandable mistake to make, but let us assure you that if a major expense is incurred no level of saving will substitute having a good Cruisers health insurance plan.

Hospitalisation is a rare event in anybody’s life, but in the unwanted event that you or someone close to you is hospitalised the bills can add up extremely quickly and the premiums that you didn’t pay for the last so many years are now looking like a pittance compared to what you are up against. So you are better to have a policy that will cover you in an emergency, with benefits such as emergency medical evacuation, inpatient expenses, choice of hospitals, worldwide use with $2.5 – $5 million in total cover.
